Solo travel can be liberating

Plan your destination but leave the journey to be discovered.

Driving solo

Driving gives the freedom to make implusive stops, take photos of those unknown towns, and have lunch with the locals.

Never feel alone

Choose when you want to talk with people. Book a day tour. Stay in share accommodation with like-minded travellers.

It's easy to get overwhelmed

You don't need perfection to start. Yes, there can be alot to organise and you're doing it on your own. But take one small step right now to build momentum. The future is shaped by what you do today, so start now and let progress replace hesitation.

Hiring a car and driving solo

Driving solo can be very empowering but these tips will help prepare you:

  • You'll need an international drivers licence, but also don't forget to pack your own country licence

  • Get adequate insurance and check your holding deposit and excess - check out rentalcover.com for extra cover for peace of mind

  • Don't forget to add 'cross border' information

  • Take photos and videos of your rental car while you have the rental person with you (so you can discuss any issues). Also make sure they show you how to use the GPS, open the bonnet, boot, petrol cap, and an emergency and after hours phone number for any issues

  • Learn the local driving rules - who has right of way at roundabouts, turning on a red light, using headlights during the day etc

  • Choose the right car for your confidence - automatics are less stressful, small car for narrow European streets, built in GPS for easy directions

  • Leaving a busy city can be stressful - check the best route out of town, don't rush, avoid night time.

  • Lock your doors - you don't want unexpected passengers and you can't go chasing a thief who reaches in and takes your handbag

  • Don't leave valuables (visible) in your car overnight - insurance may not cover you either
